Averted Vision
Baltimore Jazz Works / Baltimore FreeFall Festival / October 28, 2018 / An die Musik - Baltimore MD
Kennis Rolle: Trumpet / Leo Branderberg: Reeds / John Dahlman: Bass
John Kessell: Drums / George Spicka: Piano
The [Intro] is 3-bars of 5/4, 1-bar of 7/4, played four times. Section [A] has 3-bars of 5/4, 1-bar of 6/4, played four times. The [B] section is in 4/4. Solos are over the form. Plus it’s at an up tempo. The title is a term in astronomy, a way of not looking directly at stars, that somehow brings them into sharper focus. Sort of like with music.
Don’t over analyze, just enjoy the experience. It’s like Dr. Pearle, head of the theory department used to tell us,
“Composers just compose. It’s only later that the theoreticians come along and figure out what they did.”
Free Fall Baltimore is presented by BGE and is a program of the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts,
an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
